Okay, so… I was watching Cloverfield recently, when it came to one of the, “omgscared” scenes. It’s the scene where everyone’s walking down the street and everything’s quiet, when suddenly, the monster roars and appears in front of them. Then, from behind, there’s a full military mobilization with mechanized troops and armor.

Being a veteran, a horror fan, and someone who thinks too much about things that need no thinking, this got me to thinking… While I was in the military, we always practiced and made ourselves ready to repel a conventional or guerrilla force. We were constantly made ready to defend ourselves against a nuclear, biological, or chemical attack. We had weapons and intel and special suits to deal with all of this.

There IS no anti-giant-monster suit. If a giant aberration appeared and began wreaking havoc on an area, and I was called in as part of a troop movement to combat this threat, what would I do? How would I feel? How would I react? I mean, in the movie sense, there’s always some way to resolve the situation. But in reality, staring up at the sheer horror of a 40-story-tall beast, how does one respond?

I’m still stuck. I think that I’d follow orders and go TO the fight, but upon seeing something like that and the ineffectiveness of our weapons against it, I don’t know how I’d react.

What about you? Thoughts? How would you hold up in a giant monster invasion?
